Signs Your Heating System Needs Repair

Your furnace or heat pump usually shows warning signs before it quits completely. Catching problems early can help reduce repair bills and keep your house warm through the coldest stretches of Montana’s winters.

If you notice any of the following, give us a call:

Your system won't turn on at all or your pilot light won't stay lit

Your furnace can’t keep up when it gets really cold outside

Cold spots, blowing cold air, or uneven heating from room to room

Short cycling, where the system turns on and off rapidly

Strange noises like banging, rattling, or grinding

Larger heating bills without changing how you use the system

Burning, dusty, or musty smells when the heat runs

Your heat pump can’t switch modes or hold temperature

Heating Repair for Furnaces
and Heat Pumps

When your heat stops working, our technicians diagnose the problem and give you options to fix it. We work on furnaces and heat pumps from RUUD, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, York, and other major brands.

In most cases, the problem comes down to a worn part, a failing component, or a system that fell out of adjustment. A full heating system replacement only makes sense when the equipment is truly at the end of its life or when repairs are no longer cost-effective.

Common heating repairs we handle:

  • Ignitor and flame sensor issues

  • Faulty gas valves

  • Blower motor replacement

  • Heat exchanger inspection

  • Thermostat problems

  • Heat pump refrigerant leaks

  • Heat pump defrost issues

  • Capacitor and electrical failures

Our technicians diagnose the issue themselves, which means the person inspecting your HVAC system is also the person who understands how to fix it. You can ask technical questions and get clear answers before any work begins.

Most heating repairs in the Bozeman area run $195–$550. We charge a flat diagnostic fee to come out, then provide a written estimate before any repair work begins.

Heating Maintenance and Tune-Ups

A fall tune-up is the best way to make sure your heating system is ready before the cold weather hits.

Catching small issues during a tune-up is almost always cheaper than fixing a breakdown in January. Regular maintenance helps your furnace or heat pump run efficiently and last longer.

Heating tune-ups start at $150. A full-system service starts at $250.

Heating Installation and Replacement

Our HVAC technicians replace furnaces and heat pumps when heating systems are worn out, unreliable, or no longer worth repairing. Every installation starts with an ACCA-certified load calculation, which sizes the equipment to your home's heating demand.

Furnaces

We install RUUD gas furnaces and electric air handlers for new heating systems and furnace replacements. For homes with existing ductwork, a properly-sized furnace is a dependable choice for steady heat through a Montana winter.

Heat Pumps

Want heating and cooling from one system? We install standard and cold-climate heat pumps, sized to your home or building. During your estimate, we'll explain whether a heat pump fits your space and Bozeman's cold-weather conditions.

New Construction and Remodels

For remodels, additions, and new builds, we design and install heating systems around the layout, square footage, and long-term use of the space. Learn more about our HVAC installation planning and process.

Installation pricing depends on the equipment, your home's existing ductwork, and the complexity of the install. New RUUD residential systems come with a 5-year standard warranty and a 10-year warranty when registered. Commercial installations carry a 5-year warranty regardless of equipment type.

We provide a free, written estimate so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

Heating Services FAQs

  • Most homeowners should check the furnace filter monthly during cold months. Some filters may last longer, but homes with pets, dust, construction activity, or frequent system use may need more frequent changes.

A dirty filter can restrict airflow, reduce efficiency, and put extra strain on the furnace.

  • A light dusty smell can be normal the first time you run the furnace for the season. The smell should fade quickly. Strong burning odors, electrical smells, gas odors, or musty smells that continue after the system runs should be checked right away.

  • A heat pump can work well in many Bozeman homes, but it depends on the home’s layout, insulation, existing HVAC setup, and comfort expectations during extreme cold. Some homes may need backup heat or a hybrid system for the coldest weeks of winter. A heating estimate can help determine whether a heat pump is a practical fit.

  • Auxiliary heat usually turns on when the outdoor temperature drops, the heat pump is defrosting, or the system needs help reaching the thermostat setting. Occasional auxiliary heat is normal in cold weather. Frequent auxiliary heat can point to an efficiency issue, refrigerant problem, thermostat setting, or a heat pump that is struggling to keep up.

  • Check that the thermostat is set to heat, the temperature is set above the current room temperature, the furnace switch is on, the breaker has not tripped, and the filter is not badly clogged. For a heat pump, make sure the outdoor unit is clear of snow, ice, and debris.

If the system still does not work correctly, schedule a repair visit.
